Ribcages: Mass Conception
July 1, 2021
Fundamental differences in ribcage mass between human and animal
This is something rather becoming intuitive for those artists who physically get their hands on the torso of a dog and/or of a cat regularly, but would be quite groundbreaking for others to realize otherwise: the primary axis of a quadrupeds’ ribcage is different from that of a human’s.
Casually speaking, note how our ribcages are more from-side-to-side when looking from above, versus theirs are more from-top-to-bottom when looking from ahead; i.e. analyzing both in the transverse plane, the primary axis of our ribcage cross-section is lateral - lateral, while the primary axis of their ribcage cross-section is dorsal - ventral.
